A reflection from John Lovell
A fine day, a luxury coach with Fran our very cheerful driver, tour leader Lyn sorting out the programme, and a group of cheerful Kensington residents looking for fun. Departing at 9.00 am from Kensington Park we all enjoyed a very pleasant 1 hour 45 minute drive to the Matakohe Kauri Museum.
This was my first time there but having heard about it from my friends, I was really looking forward to experiencing it for myself. In fact, not only was this Museum so much better than I had imagined - it was outstanding.
The staff welcomed everyone, and then gave a short informative address about the Kauri forests in Northland, and the history of the museum. We then were invited to explore all the various exhibits and collections at our own pace.
There are various designated areas and rooms each with their own display of photographs, handmade Kauri handmade furniture, trophy rooms, and a working sawmill showing how the huge Kauri trees were milled in the early 1900’s. The" Kauri Gum Collection” was at the lower level and this room of treasures was just fantastic!
The local Post Office complete with old dial up telephones and plug-in Exchange brought back fond memories of the Party Line and shared secrets! Lunch at the Gumdiggers cafe was followed by more exploring.
We stopped at the Puhoi Cheese factory on the way back where everyone enjoyed various refreshments and the opportunity to purchase great cheese specials. Another really wonderful outing enjoyed by all. Many thanks again to Lyn Hodgkiss for all the organizing and to Fran Silke, our resident Coach driver, for a safe trip. It was a great day.
